“This is not a Burial, It’s a Resurrection” is a critically acclaimed feature that pits the strength of collective resistance against the forces of capitalism and colonialism.
Exploring themes of spirituality and grief, director Lemohang Jeremiah Mosese creates a film that is a bold, visually intense waking dream of cinematic depth, set in the pythonic mountains of land-locked enclave of Lesotho.
The film charts the final journey and last stand of Mantoa; an 80-year-old widow, preparing for death and ancestral reunion, against a backdrop of the threat of forced resettlement of her community, due to the construction of a reservoir. Mantoa, brought to life with an entrancing central performance from Mary Twala (poignantly, her last), is ignited and invigorated with a renewed will to live, to fight for all that she holds dear.
Lyrical and poetic, Mosese’s feature won Best Costume Design, Best Cinematography, Best Actress and Best Director at the 2020 Africa Movie Academy Awards.
Following the screening, we invite you to stay a while to explore and engage in an open and candid conversation, curated by our film programmer, Ephraim Webber.
