A Message from the Bernie Grant Arts Centre

We’re pausing to protect our future.

The Bernie Grant Arts Centre has never just been a building.

Since opening in 2007, we have been a home for Black British creativity, a space for radical storytelling, and a place where community and culture collide. We have supported generations of artists, amplified voices that often go unheard, and honoured the powerful legacy of Bernie Grant MP.

But right now, we are at a crossroads.

Like many arts organisations across the UK, we are facing serious financial challenges. After months of internal work, reflection, and difficult decisions, we are entering a strategic transformation – a deliberate pause that will allow us to rebuild sustainably.

This reset is about survival. And more than that, it’s about our future.

This means that:

  • We are pausing most programming and all new hires for now
  • We are honouring all existing bookings and projects that align with our mission
  • We are reimagining the next chapter of our Centre
  • We are working hard behind the scenes to secure long-term partnerships and funding.

This process has not been easy. We know that for many in our community, Bernie Grant Arts Centre is a lifeline. A place that holds history, identity, and creativity. We are deeply aware of the disappointment and concern this news may bring.

But we want to be clear: this is not the end.

It is a recalibration, a chance for us to stabilise, and to build something stronger, more resilient, and more rooted in the needs of the people we serve.
