Remembering Bernie Grant on his Birthday
17 February
Today, we proudly celebrate the birthday of Bernie Grant, a visionary leader, tireless advocate, and champion of social justice. As we reflect on his incredible legacy, we honour his lifelong commitment to equality, culture, and the empowerment of marginalised communities.
Born in Guyana on February 17, 1944, Bernie Grant made history as one of the UK’s first Black MPs, elected in 1987 to represent Tottenham. Throughout his career, he stood firmly against injustice, advocating for racial equality, workers’ rights, and better opportunities for underrepresented communities. His powerful voice and fearless leadership continue to inspire generations.
At the Bernie Grant Arts Centre (BGAC), we are deeply proud to carry forward his vision. As a space dedicated to amplifying diverse voices and fostering creativity, BGAC embodies his belief in the transformative power of arts and culture. We remain committed to creating opportunities for artists, performers, and storytellers who reflect the richness and diversity of our communities.
On this special day, we invite you to join us in remembering Bernie Grant’s contributions. Whether by engaging in discussions on social justice, supporting local artists, or simply sharing his story, let’s continue his mission of progress and inclusivity.
