BLACK LENS: BLACK MOTHER (Cert 15)
7pm, Thursday 1st June 2023
Join us for our first Black Lens film night in June; part of our Windrush 75 celebrations.
Our monthly Black Lens film night will be a special screening of Black Mother; one of two films we are screening in June as part of our special Windrush 75 celebrations.
Black Mother is an arresting audio-visual love letter to Jamaica.
Director Khalik Allah takes us on a spiritual journey through the bustling metropolises and tranquil countryside, introducing us to a succession of vividly rendered souls who call this island home.
Their frank testimonies create a multi-voiced symphony, set against a visual poem of unforgettable portraiture. Thoroughly immersed between the sacred and profane, Black Mother channels rebellion and reverence into a deeply personal proclamation informed by Jamaica’s turbulent history, but existing in the urgent present.
“I shot my last film in the streets. I shot this one on a river. Everything in the film is connected through water; from the fruit to the land to the people – with a specific emphasis on the woman who carries life for nine months.”
“I want Black Mother to hit you in the chest more than the head. It’s a magnifier and mirror of modern day Jamaica reflecting its complicated history through the lens of family and spirituality.”
Director, Khalik Allah
