Why Tottenham's rich history and strong community matter to us
More than any other area, Tottenham represents the inclusive and diverse nature of London and Bernie Grant Arts Centre is at the heart of that. Bernie Grant, MP, recognised the extraordinary breadth of artistic talent in Tottenham which, too often, was held back by lack of support. The impetus behind the Bernie Grant Arts Centre was to create a place where artists of black and minority-ethnic heritage and those growing up in disadvantaged circumstances can train, develop new work, and build foundations for the rest of their careers.
A decade on from the Centre’s opening in 2007, Tottenham is London’s fastest-growing creative zone. From sprawling communities of artists working out of warehouses to world-renowned dance and theatre organisations based here, the Bernie Grant Arts Centre is right in the heart of the north London creative renaissance which is transforming Tottenham.
With great transport links and massive changes taking place, Tottenham is growing everyday. New homes are being built. Businesses are popping up on every corner. Through our commitment to making the arts accessible to all, we want everyone to benefit from this transformation.
We work collaboratively with everyone from local young people to some of London’s biggest names, including LIFT Festival, Royal Court Theatre, Tate, Dance Umbrella, and Film Africa. Every collaboration helps us build a well-rounded programme of dance and theatre, music, comedy, and cinema for our local community. And by deepening that engagement, we are supporting the next generation of artist and creatives, empowering them to make work which speaks to their own sense of place and identity.
Tottenham Green is the civic heart of Tottenham. It is home to the Grade II-listed Tottenham Town Hall, Marcus Garvey Library, The College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London, Tottenham Green Leisure Centre and, of course, the Bernie Grant Arts Centre.
The green itself is a beautiful space to meet up, shop and have fun. Our friends at Tottenham Green Market run an market every Sunday (11am-4pm) during the summer months with street food vendors, drink, vintage goods and crafts for sale. Every December, the annual Winter Festival celebrates talent from the local area.
