The Mayor’s Race + Q&A

14 December

An absorbing documentary looking at the intersection of race, poverty, class and politics

The Mayor’s Race is another story in the generations’ long battle for marginalised people to find their place in politics.

Marvin Rees grew up in Bristol’s ghettos with violence, racial tensions and poverty on a daily basis. In 2012 he runs for mayor in Bristol, UK. The journey into politics hits him with rejection, failure and an inner struggle that eventually leads to the biggest challenge of his life. Will he be able to go the distance and become the first Mayor of African descent in Europe? The Mayor’s Race is about the desire to overcome doubt and the boundaries between social background and power.

After the screening join filmmakers Loraine Blumenthal and Rob Mitchell for a discussion about the film and its themes.
