An inspiring celebration of Ignatius Sancho through music and dance
presented by Juwon Ogungbe
Acclaimed composer and musician Juwon Ogungbe presents Ignatius Inspires, a concert and series of school music workshops inspired by the music and life of Ignatius Sancho (1729-1780).
Born on a slave ship, Ignatius Sancho was among the first Africans to live free in Britain and is the first black Briton known to have voted in a Parliamentary election. He was a musician, composer, writer, and man of refinement who became an icon for the anti-slavery cause.
Through music and dance workshops held in local primary schools with the participation of choreographer Caroline Muraldo, Haringey young people will develop a new performance piece incorporating Sancho’s own compositions, blended with their own inspirations and creativity, which will have its premiere at the Bernie Grant Arts Centre.
The entire creative process will be documented by young artists from Diversity Matters and archived online by Griots Arts.
Suitable for all ages.
