FILM: LOVE AND BASKETBALL
Ultimately a story of growth and romance
This glorious, sunny, physical Black Rom-Com has bloomed into a cult classic over the years. Come for sports and flirts, stay for complex romance rarely given to Black leads.
Love and Basketball is Gina Prince-Bythewood’s debut film and follows the trajectory of Quincy (Omar Epps) and Monica (Sanaa Lathan) as next door neighbours obsessed with basketball. They end up falling in love, but their respective careers threaten to pull them apart. Sanaa Lathan particularly shines as the tomboy Monica, judged for being sporty by her mother and overly emotional in a women’s sport that doesn’t have nearly the same respect as its male counterpart.
Ultimately a story of growth and romance, the film bounces through with the best 90s hip hop and RnB tracks of its day.
