Festival in the Square – Day 1
Saturday 26 June - 1-8pm - booking required
Join us for a bold, dynamic and contemporary family friendly multi-arts festival that celebrates the community and descendants of the Windrush Generation. Across one weekend we will showcase world-class Black artists from Tottenham and beyond, with so much to discover from music to spoken word, circus to art exhibitions and more. Get involved in workshops, be inspired by high octane performances and move to soulful beats.
All day long on Saturday we have our fabulous Tottenham comedian, dancer and poet, Sheba Montserrat hosting, you can sign up for a workshop with world-renowned graffiti artists, make your own African mask or just come and browse our Windrush Festival Market and grab some delicious Caribbean food or a local craft beer from our pop vendors.
UP:RISE – 1-2pm, 3-4pm
This year will mark the 10th anniversary of the fatal police violence in our borough of Haringey which resulted in the UK “Riots” of August 2011. In this workshop for young people, participants will explore and respond to this moment in time through film, song, spoken word and rap.
The workshop will be led by UP:RISE as part of the wider UP:RISE project – a ground-breaking nationwide augmented reality public art work by Baff Akoto, scheduled throughout July and completing on the 6th August 2021 at the Bernie Grant Arts Centre

Yemella Drummers – 1-1.30pm
Local drummers Yemalla believe the drum is the heartbeat of our souls. They’ve taken their craft across continents, travelling throughout Europe to Africa using drumming as a healing tool for themselves and the communities they encounter. Hear their drums, and then take part in an unforgettable workshop.
Steppaz: Performance – 1.30-2pm
Tottenham’s 100% favourite World Champion youth dance company is guaranteed to charge the festival with more energy than the national grid
The Elite Squad take over the Square to perform a powerful floor show that will inspire you to follow your dreams – One Step At A Time! The performance will be followed by a 20 minute workshop for all ages and abilities.
Emmanuel the Magnificent Circus Skills – 1.30-2pm
Emmanuel’s dynamic circus skills workshop combines traditional African acrobatics with skills learnt from a Chinese State Circus master. His extraordinary feats of balance, performed in mesmerising style to music from across Western Africa, have wowed audiences at festivals such as WOMAD in Spain and the Edinburgh Festival, and Notting Hill and Hackney Carnivals.
Joy Rose Vocal Marathon Workshop – 1.30-3.30pm
Are you a singer wanting to improve your technique and learn from the best? Joy Rose can help. Joy is not only an experienced singer in her band Incognito, but she’s also recorded and collaborated with some of the biggest names in the music industry including Sting, Chaka Khan, Brenda Russell and Noel Gallagher. Who better to teach you how to improve your range, vocal strength and breathing techniques.
Generation Uncovered – 2.30-4pm
Black, rooted in Africa, seasoned in the Caribbean and served in the Black British experience; Generation Uncovered features Aneesa Marie, ArA Harmonic, Boy Nash, and DeeRiginal and Goodhead from Hear Me Out, and will bring neo-soul, and London hip-hop and roots reggae music flavour to the stage.
Ayo & Solomon Family Storytelling – 2.30-3pm
Brother and sister, Ayo & Solomon, tell the story of Africa and its people through poetry, movement and spoken word. They’ll encourage participation from the crowd, weaving your narratives and intersecting your stories with the history of African people.
Yolanda Brown and her quintet – 4-5pm
Come listen to the incredible double MOBO-award winning saxophonist Yolanda Brown and her quintet, as she plays her delicious fusion of reggae, jazz and soul. Presenter of the acclaimed CBeebies TV show “YolanDa’s Band Jam” and a regular with Jools Holland’s Rhythm and Blues Orchestra, let Yoland’s amazing musical energy light up your Saturday.
