An exhibition on view Oct 13 - Nov 13
By Elisabeth Bond
SOLDIERS will be Elisabeth Bond's second exhibition at Bernie Grant Arts Centre. For over a year she has been recording interviews with former soldiers who have fought in Korea, Northern Ireland, Kuwait, Iraq and Afghanistan. Elisabeth then extrapolated details from the interviews and interpreted them visually through drawings and woodcut prints.
In 2009 she gained a merit with an MA (Fine Art) from the University of East London. She started specialising in printmaking while at university and has built up a considerable body of work on paper - woodcuts, monoprints and more recently drawings. Her work comes out of her interest in society, in what drives people, whether they come from China, from India or here in the UK.
SOLDIERS is made up of drawings, woodcuts and a 14 minute film, based on interviews with former soldiers. The film in particular questions how wars are decided by politicians but the people who do the fighting, dying, and getting injured are young men and women who join the services with enthusiasm and then are left scarred both mentally and physically to pick up the pieces as best they can.
The film has been made by Mike Southon. Mike is an experienced filmaker with several years at the BBC followed by free lance work taking him all over the world. He edited the recorded interviews and then spent a day filming in Elisabeth's Tottenham studio. Putting the final version together was done in his own studio.
