Monkey King

A Modern Beijing Opera

‘Double violin assault specialists’, punk violinists Chi2 provide a brand new spin on 1970’s kitsch TV show Monkey. Old school favourites Monkey, Tripitaka, and Pigsy are revived with a modern twist. Fusing the worlds of electro-acoustic music, film-making, theatre performance and one of the world’s most ancient artforms, the Beijing Opera, Monkey King bursts with colour, drama, energy and vibrancy.

Chi2 (Liz and Sarah Liew) partner with Gold medal martial artist and actor Tom Wu, award-winning producer Tom E Morrison and visual artists Michele Rosaus and Steve Teers to magically weave a charismatic blend of east meets west rhythms and melodies, spoken word and martial arts. Chi2’s inimitable style, a dynamic fusion of electric and Chinese fiddles and electronic beats has led them to work with artists such as KLF/Orb, Moby, Nelly Furtado, Gnarls Barkley, Lamb and Goldfrapp.

In their first full length theatre show, they extend their vision to weave one of the strangest mythical tales for an urban generation. Joined by a live band of Chinese drummers, exotic instruments and angelic vocals, it’s quite fair to say that you may have seen nothing like this!
