Ballots & Bullets in Mississippi (Black History Studies)
Sat 29th October 2016, 7.30pm

Ballots & Bullets In Mississippi – narrated by actor and activist Danny Glover (The Color Purple, Lethal Weapon) – is an inspiring and provocative account of how Black landowning families in Mississippi – who controlled almost 2 million acres of land in the 1960's and who believed in armed self-defense – became the secret weapon of the 'non-violent civil rights movement' for voting rights and racial equality in America's most violently racist state.

When civil rights organizing was met with escalating terror, Black landowners and independent farmers played a vital role providing safe havens for hundreds of activists from outside the state. They also organized and provided armed protection for communities being targeted by the Ku Klux Klan for their voter registration activities and were typically the first to dare to try and register to vote and the first to run for public office.
