Black Is... Black Ain't - A Marlon Riggs Retrospective
12 August 2017 - 7.30pm

1h 27min | Documentary

The inspiration for Black Is... Black Ain't came to documentary filmmaker Marlon Riggs as he lay in a hospital bed, suffering from AIDS-related complications in 1994. 'It was if the film was rolling before me,' he said, 'and I was just transcribing, I almost couldn't keep up.' In his ultimate film, Riggs speaks to homophobia and sexism within the black community, juxtaposing snippets of misogynistic and anti-gay slurs from popular hip-hop songs alongside interviews with intellectuals including Cornel West, bell hooks and Angela Davis.

The Marlon Riggs Retrospective includes:

TONGUES UNTIED - 10th June- 19:30

MARLON RIGGS SHORTS - 8th July- 19:30

BLACK IS... BLACK AIN'T - 12th August-19:30

Marlon Riggs (3 February 1957- 5 April 1994) was an American filmmaker, poet and gay rights activists. Educated at Harvard, he moved to Oakland, California, where he worked in film production and later taught at U.C. Berkeley's Graduate School of Journalism. His work scrutinises blackness, racism, sexual identity, and the stigma of HIV/AIDS, and was widely acclaimed critically and academically during his lifetime.

Programme supported by Film Hub London, managed by Film London. Proud to be a partner of the BFI Film Audience Network, funded by the National Lottery.
