Shorts - A Marlon Riggs Retrospective
8 July 2017 - 7.30pm

AFFIRMATIONS

10min | Short

A look at what it's like to be gay and black in America.

ANTHEM

9min | Short |

This film is a tone-poem like collage of sounds and images: gay black men dance, sing, and recite poetry. They call each other to arms to parade and flaunt their race and sexual orientation. They call on each other to rewrite history, to pervert the language, to "be freaky and free," and to confront America in order to redefine it in a way that gives them standing as equals.

NO REGRETS (Original title: NON, JE NE REGRETTE RIEN)

38min | Short

Five gay black men who are living with HIV discuss their struggles with the disease.

The Marlon Riggs Retrospective includes:

TONGUES UNTIED - 10th June- 19:30

MARLON RIGGS SHORTS - 8th July- 19:30

BLACK IS... BLACK AIN'T - 12th August-19:30

Marlon Riggs (3 February 1957- 5 April 1994) was an American filmmaker, poet and gay rights activists. Educated at Harvard, he moved to Oakland, California, where he worked in film production and later taught at U.C. Berkeley's Graduate School of Journalism. His work scrutinises blackness, racism, sexual identity, and the stigma of HIV/AIDS, and was widely acclaimed critically and academically during his lifetime.
