Ghana, USA. 2016. 101 mins. Akan, Ewe with English subtitles.
When her baby is born with a cleft lip and cerebral palsy, Essuman is told that she has a 'dirty womb'. Her partner swiftly leaves her, shattering her plans for family life and a good place within rural Ghanaian society. Superstition in the community grows, with whispers of the child's deformities being the work of the devil. As Essuman's searches for a cure end in failure, her desperation mounts and her love for her son is tested. Is she starting to believe the old wives' tales? Beautifully shot with a stunning central performance from rising star, Rukiyat Masud, Priscilla Anany's debut is a subtly told yet powerful story of female empowerment and a mother's love.
